Climbing Gym: My Journey from Beginner to Fan

If you’ve ever thought about trying a climbing gym, let me share my story. Moving to the U.S. was a big change, and I knew I needed a hobby to stay active and healthy. American food can be delicious but also high in calories, so finding the right exercise was important. After scrolling through options online, I came across the idea of a climbing gym. I was curious because this isn’t something we have in Egypt, so I decided to give it a try.

Discovering the World of Climbing Gyms

After doing some research, I learned that climbing gyms are places where people can practice rock climbing indoors, in a safe and controlled space. It wasn’t just about getting stronger; it was also about solving problems, meeting people, and joining a friendly community. Excited by what I read, I decided to visit a climbing gym called Mesa Rim in San Diego. When I arrived, I was amazed by how big the place was!

My First Visit: Entering a New World

Inside, the gym was filled with tall walls covered in colorful rocks. The gym was divided into two main areas: bouldering and top rope climbing. Bouldering is climbing on shorter walls without ropes, while top rope climbing is on taller walls with ropes and requires a partner. Watching people easily climb these walls was inspiring, and I couldn’t wait to try it myself.

Bouldering: My First Step

Since I didn’t have a partner, I decided to start with bouldering. I watched a few climbers to understand how it works. Soon, two friendly guys noticed me watching and welcomed me. Being a social person, I told them it was my first day, and they were happy to give me advice. Before I knew it, three hours had passed!

Climbing: A Physical and Mental Challenge

I thought climbing would only be a workout, but I learned it also requires planning. You don’t just climb; you have to think about each move and plan your way up. Bouldering was tough and needed a lot of strength and flexibility, but the mental challenge made it fun. Each climb felt like solving a puzzle on the wall.

Trying Top Rope Climbing

After a few visits, I wanted to try top rope climbing. However, the gym required two classes—a training class and a test. In the training, I learned how to tie ropes and work with a belayer (the person who holds the rope to keep the climber safe). I was impatient and took the test right away. I failed twice, but I passed on the third try!

Finding a Climbing Partner

For top rope climbing, you need a partner. At the front desk, the gym could call out for partners if you needed one. One day, I heard an announcement for a partner, so I offered to help. The climber I met seemed unsure when he found out it was my first time, but he agreed to help me climb. Reaching the top on my first climb was amazing, even though it was a bit scary at that height!

Progress and Making Friends

Over the next month, I started going to the climbing gym regularly. I got to know many people, and the climbing community turned out to be one of the friendliest I’ve ever seen. Everyone supports each other and cheers each other on. I went from struggling with easy climbs to being able to handle more difficult ones. Climbing became one of my favorite activities!
